| Sitting around a woodland fire, playing a 6 string cello guitar (bought for 10/- at the local YMCA and refurbished as a school woodwork project) and
surrounded by a derelict farmhouse with a group of friends similarly inclined was his grounding in the broad world of Folk Music.
That was at the age of 13 and his passion and loyalty for and to traditional Folk Music is still as strong 40 odd years later.
Never one to tolerate a good song sung badly, his encouragement to others, by suggestion or simply by example, has motivated many who, previously reticent, now sing out publicly and with equal enthusiasm to his own. Belief in the saying "keep live music live!" is evident in the way Jeff sings and plays his music as well as the number of Folk Clubs he is involved with, either organizing them or steering from the wings. His nom de plume of "The Rustic Charmer" is further proof of his lighthearted approach to life and has made him many friends over recent years following the adoption of that name. Many musical partnerships have come and gone over the years, but when Jeff first slotted in some harmonies to Iain Glovers rendition of "Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy" a new chapter was born and, as Keepers Fold, the two of them have formed a firm and unbreakable bond in both their musical and personal lives, this again reflected in the way they deliver their songs and entertainment. Jeff plays the 6 & 12 string guitar, Appalachian Dulcimer, bodhran, accordion, bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and ukulele. His recordings include the albums "Charmer & Chums Live at the Black-a-Moor", "On The Quiet Side", a selection of slower Folk ballads and the first album as Keepers Fold "Time to Go". He has completed 3 successful tours of Canada and North America as a solo artiste since 2000 and has toured Germany, Eire and Scotland over the last ten years. Jeff lives with his wife Sally (the long suffering Roadie"), in Settle, North Yorkshire. |
Iain has been around since the mid 60's starting during the folk revival. His first appearance was at the Fox and Goose in Bradford.
In these early days Iain was known as an unaccompanied singer and it wasn't until '69 that he decided to try his hand at the mandolin (he says he is still trying!!) 1969 saw the formation of 'The Crofters' and for over 12 years along with Alan McAvoy and Kevin Renton they performed on the folk scene both in the UK and across Europe appearing at clubs and at major festivals. After "The Crofters" came "Leather Bottle" who appeared at 'The Old Tradition' on a Sunday Lunchtime in Harrogate for some 7 years. Iain is affectionately known as "The Miserable Mandolin Player" and is renowned for his ability to lift almost any song either with his skilful and sensitive mandolin picking, or simply with his incredibly powerful voice. Having latterly formed a successful partnership with Mark Longster as "Early Doors" Iain who remains a traditionalist, teamed up with Jeff in the spring of 2003, appearing as "Keepers Fold" ostensibly to continue the heritage of rich folk ballads and rousing chorus songs. Iain plays the mandola, mandolin, 12 & 6 string guitars and tenor banjo as well as singing . Recordings include "Live at the Watermill" and 'Naturally' with The Crofters," 'Full Circle', 'Sounds Country', 'Jolly Sailors' and 'Almost Live' as Early Doors, as well as several other albums with assorted artistes. The latest being Time to Go with Jeff as Keepers Fold International tours include Germany, Holland, France, Eire, Isle of Man and Grand Cayman BWI and 3 tours of the USA and Canada with Jeff. Iain lives in Newby Wiske near Northallerton, North Yorkshire |
